The Messenger is portraying Hermes. Hermes derived from the Etruscan deity Turms, from Sanskrit Turi; 'swift' and Tur 'run'. That is why his name relates to Mercury, the speediest of all planets and the base word for Merchant, commerce. Why so much emphasis on speed? If you can't keep up and move quickly, your competitors will beat you to it. Hermes is a dangerous foe, a trickster, and a thief. He brought the spirits of the dead to the underworld and was honoured as a god of sleep (blindness). Hermes' job is to trap you with such a speed that you find yourself unprepared, defenceless and you become oblivious to the truth.
